As a sweaty girl, I’m always looking for sweat-proof clothing

I have hyperhidrosis, which is a medical condition that causes excessive sweating.

I sweat a lot. A lot.

Finding clothes that feel comfy, look cute and that don’t show my sweat stains can be a challenge. I’m always on the hunt for new products.

When I came across Social Citizen sweat proof shirts for women, I was pretty excited.

There are lots of sweatproof undershirts on the market, but few sweatproof shirts that can be worn as the main show.

With sweat-blocking underarm pads sewn right into these shirts, Social Citizen seemed like an exciting prospect.

So, I ordered a shirt and patiently waited for it to arrive.

I’ve had my Social Citizen shirt for a little over a year, and figured it was time to write a review of it. My goal is to share info so you can decide if this shirt is right for you.

Before we get into my review, I want to be clear:

This post wasn’t sponsored by Social Citizen.

They didn’t ask me to write it.

So you can consider it my honest opinion.

That being said, there are affiliate links in this post. That means if you purchase a Social Citizen shirt from any of the links, I’ll earn a small commission. This money helps cover the cost of running Sweaty Girl Society. So, if you use links, thank you! 🙏

Anyways, let’s get into it…

What got me interested in Social Citizen shirts

As previously mentioned, there are many sweatproof undershirts on the market.

Those undershirts often have visible, sewn-in underarm pads. They’re sometimes made from a sweat resistant material. And they’re typically tight-fitting and meant to be worn under your clothing as a protective layer.

Social Citizen shirts are a little different. They are a shirt in and of themselves. They are the main show.

They contain hidden sweatproof pads that are sewn right into the underarms.

Pretty cool right?!

To get a better sense of what I mean, here’s a look at the shirt inside out:

The underarm pad contains several layers sweat-absorbing and waterproof materials to stop sweat stains from showing through.

Here’s a closer look at those layers:

I think it’s pretty ingenious how it’s constructed.

Even more ingenious is the material…

The material is ridiculously soft

My favorite thing about this shirt is the super soft and stretchy feel.

It’s made of 95% combed cotton and 5% spandex and I am here for it.

This shirt is so darn soft and comfy! If all my shirts could be this material, I’d be a happy girl.

The quality feels really good, and the shirt stretches just the right amount:

Now, let’s talk about the fit of this shirt.

If you like a relaxed, ‘boy cut’ shirt, this shirt is for you

To be honest, when I unpackaged the shirt, my first thought was: Oh, this is a men’s shirt packaged as a women’s.

And it very well could be.

So, if you prefer a tighter-fitting, tailored shirt with a lower neck-line, you’re probably not going to like the fit of this shirt.

If you like a relaxed-fitting, oversized, ‘boy-cut’ or ‘boyfriend-style’ shirt, I think you’re really going to like the fit of shirt.

It took me a while to warm up to it, but now that I’m used to the fit, I quite enjoy wearing it.

I typically wear it on the weekends when I want something slightly more put together than pj’s but that’s optimized for comfort.

I will say that the shirt is quite long though, and if I pull it down, it stretches awkwardly across my hips (I have relatively wide hips compared to my waist):

So, as long as I wear it bunched above my hips, we’re golden.

(The more I analyze it, I do think this might just be a men’s shirt, sold as a women’s shirt.)

For reference, I’m wearing a size small. I’m 5’3″ and about 130 lbs:

Let’s talk about the color

Ok, so I ordered the shirt in “Heather Grey”. I do love this color.

HOWEVER…

If you want to wear this shirt out-and-about, and not worry about sweat stains, I wouldn’t recommend this color.

Grey is not at all forgiving.

If you get some underarm leakage, it’s going to show.

If you sweat on your back, tummy or under your boobs, it’s gonna show.

I sweat in ALL of those places, but I don’t really wear this shirt out of my house — other than to the grocery store — so I’m ok with some rogue sweat showing through.

A “safer” choice would be the black shirt.

Ok, now let’s get to the most important and central part of this shirt: the underarm pads.

The million dollar question: do the underarm pads work to stop sweat?

Right off the bat, I have a beef with the underarm pads: They need a good amount of “tending to”.

This isn’t a shirt you quickly throw on and go.

If you do, chances are the underarm pads will land in the wrong position and will creep out from under your sleeve.

Kinda like this:

See it peeking?? 👀

Every time you put on this shirt, you need to take a few seconds to adjust the placement of the armpit pads.

Then, sometimes throughout the day, you have to readjust them, especially if you’re moving around a lot.

They tend to bunch up or slide down over the course of the day.

This isn’t necessarily a showstopper, but it’s an important point to be aware of.

The upside is that when the underarm pads are in the correct place, you can’t noticeably see them:

My second beef about the underarm pads is that they can get hot.

In fact, I just wore this shirt on the weekend. It was a hot day and I was cleaning our home. I could feel the heat building under my arms.

So, please know that the underarm pads are a little bulky and tend to hold the heat.

Finally, it’s important to understand that you can get leakage if the pads aren’t in the right place or if your sweat rolls down the side of your body, bypassing the pads.

This has happened to me on occassion.

I think it’s due to the nature of the shirt’s looser fit. There are more gaps for sweat to sneak through.

So, if you want absolutely-no-sweat-stains-whatsoever, this shirt might not be for you.

On the upside, the underarm pads do hold a considerable amount of liquid. I test pouring a 1/4 cup of water on them, and they absorbed it well. I was impressed.

So, what’s my final take?

I have mixed feelings about this shirt.

I love the soft and stretchy feel of the material.

I love wearing it on the weekends when I want a casual, oversized shirt that’s an upgrade from my pj’s.

But I don’t love the time it takes me to adjust the underarm pads (honestly, this takes like maybe 15 seconds, so I’m probably being dramatic, but it still feels like a barrier to just throwing it on).

And I don’t love how the underarm pads can trap the heat.

That’s my personal take. Take it for what it’s worth!

Who do I think will love this shirt?

I think you’ll love this shirt if you like to wear a boyfriend style shirt.

I think you’ll love it if you want a shirt that will mostly protect you from visible underarm sweat stains, but you don’t mind if a little rogue sweat happens to leak through. And you don’t need to worry about hiding sweat from your back, tummy or under-boob.

And I think you’ll love this shirt if you value high-quality, soft-brushed cotton. It’s made from a truly beautiful t-shirt material.

OK. I hope that helps! My goal was to be as honest as possible so you can make a more informed decision.
